{"id":21951,"date":"2025-06-19T14:13:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T14:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peers.universityofgalway.ie\/?p=21951"},"modified":"2025-11-21T13:16:28","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T13:16:28","slug":"phe-chemical-biological-radiological-and-nuclear-incidents-clinical-management-and-health-protection-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peers.universityofgalway.ie\/hu\/2025\/06\/19\/phe-chemical-biological-radiological-and-nuclear-incidents-clinical-management-and-health-protection-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"PHE &#8211; Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents clinical management and health protection, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Executive summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first full revision of a suite of advice originally published in 2006 by the Health<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protection Agency, a predecessor body of Public Health England, under the title \u2018CBRN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>incidents: clinical management and health protection\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new edition updates the chemical and biological guidance given in the 2006 edition and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>adds additional material on a range of new and emerging threats in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The radiation incident response section has been completely re-written to integrate the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>well-established European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation\u2019s rapid clinical<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>assessment tool with care pathways derived from the WHO global consensus guidelines on<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>radiation injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional materials have also been included concerning the health protection elements of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>response to mass casualty incidents including hearing loss, blood-borne virus transmission,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>antibiotic prophylaxis for bomb injury wounds and screening for cognitive impairment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audience for this publication remains to be first responders, emergency departments and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>public health and health protection professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have retained the system of keeping the disease, syndrome, or agent specific advice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>sheets as being capable of being used as standalone items that can be printed out and used<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to inform staff responding to identified threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This publication is the product of the advice and guidance offered by very many colleagues<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from the United Kingdom\u2019s National Health Service, Defence Medical Services, and Public<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health England.
